Next Steps Taken on Downing Street; Letter to Speaker on Another GOP Abuse of Power; Bush Hits Another Low

From: Conyers' Blog - The DSM Saga continues...

At least Three Important Developments to Report on Today:

Downing Street

Today, 51 Members and I took the Downing Street Investigation to the next level by filing a Freedom of Information Act request with the White House, the Pentagon, and the State Department. We also made a formal request for hearings with the Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary, International Relations, Armed Services, and Intelligence. Raw Story has a copy of both letters.

The FOIA request is critical because a response by the Administration is mandatory under the law. They may try to claim some of the requested material is exempt or subject to redaction, but at the end of the day they will have to say something. And whatever they say, it will help advance our investigation.

The letter to the Committee Chairs is also important. This is the first formal request for hearings in the House on the DSM. While the Chairs may choose do deny, or ignore, our requests, by doing so there will at least be some political accountability. That is to say, by denying the request they will be telling the world that they don’t think charges that the Administration went to war under false pretenses are worth investigating.

We are not done. The nationwide town hall meetings on DSM on July 23 – linked to here – will help us get more feedback from the voters, and educate the public. I will continue to pursue this issue wherever it takes us.

Letter to Speaker on GOP Abuse of Power

The GOP never seems to learn that power is not to be abused or misused. A few days ago, several Republicans appeared to threaten Major League Baseball with punitive legislative sanctions if they permitted the Washington Nationals to be sold to an ownership consortium that included a Democrat – George Soros. To me that crosses a line of appropriate behavior, and Leader Pelosi, Democratic Whip Hoyer, Education and Workforce Ranking Member Miller and I wrote to the Speaker asking him to denounce this over the top behavior. U.S. Newswire has the story.

Bush hits a New Low

The new Zogby poll speaks for itself.
