One Month left until Chicago's bans on hand-held phones for drivers to go into effect
In Chicago, this is a big issue. Many accidents have occurred while yakking on the cell phone. But, after July 8th, anybody caught will be fined unless hand free devices are used. I already have one. I received it in a grab bag last Christmas (yea for me). This will prove interesting in the next few months since the surrounding suburbs don't have this band in place. We all know whenever a new ordinance is put into effect, many people are caught initially. This is a nifty way for the City of Chicago to make a lot of money in a short period of time until the idea catches on. Anyway, I'm glad this ordinance is in effect because people's peripheral vision is obstructed with the phones up to their ears. Yak on a cell phone all you want. But if you drive into Chicago, you'd better keep both hands on the wheel.
A ban on using hand-held cell phones while driving in the city — a proposal that languished in the city council for six years — sailed through on a parliamentary trick Wednesday.
Ald. Burt Natarus (42nd), the proposal's longtime backer, caught his colleagues napping and slipped the ordinance through without debate, a move that annoyed several aldermen.
